On August 12, 2005, Gen. Pedro Dumol, Engr. Loreto Marcelino and Eldwin Zaldivar had a chance to visit Capiz Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CAPELCO) in Panay Island where the first broadband over power line (BLP) was piloted in the Philippines by Nextream Technology, a US based company, headed by Mr. Ronald Fesalbon. The BPL technology provides internet, voice such as cable tv services via power line at minimal cost. The technology is through the use of radio energy that will be coupled with power lines and will be distributed into every home. A device in the home plugs into a normal wall outlet and typically provides an Ethernet connection to a computer or home network. Within this structure, broadband data and telephony are the primary consumer BPL products. Test results have shown that BPL can provide data speeds in order to 1.5Mbps-108Mbps.PENELCO plans to adopt this technology through the same company to the Province of Bataan so that we too can benefit from it. In fact, the management will send three computer engineers to CAPELCO to study the system for one month and how would it be implemented to our present system. Mr. Fesalbon has already shown his intent to implement the project to Bataan. BPL technology uses only the existing power line to connect to internet, use telephone, watch tv or do all of these at the same time. With this new breakthrough people in the rural areas especially students will have a chance to study and research and compete with others even if they are far from the city. PENELCO is looking forward to serve more its consumers for the betterment of the province. We just hope that this project will be realized and prosper in the near future. |
